McIlroy ties record with 63
Golf, 17:04, July 15, 2010 ,
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy equalled a major championship record with a 9-under 63 in the opening round of the Open Championship.
The 21-year-old said the conditions on the Old Course at St Andrews were begging to be taken advantage of.
He became the 22nd player in golf history to shoot 63 in a major championship. The last player to do it was Tiger Woods at the 2007 PGA Championship.
"You're never going to get St. Andrews playing any easier," McIlroy said. "We really needed to take advantage of the conditions out there this morning."
