Montgomerie admits he only has himself to blame

Colin Montgomerie admits that he only has himself to blame after a poor showing at the Open in St Andrews.

The Scot shot a final-round 73 to finish four-over for the tournament and accepts that this may be the last time he plays on the famous Old Course, with the event not likely to return there until 2015. Then, he will be 52 years old and he doubts his ability to qualify.
Montgomerie specifically pointed to his putting as the reason why he failed to do better at the Home of Golf this time around. He admitted that he is getting fearful on the greens but he does not know exactly why.
Speaking after his round, the Ryder Cup captain said: "My performance doesn't take long to analyse. I didn't putt well.
"I'm getting fearful on the greens - why I don't know because I'm hitting the ball as hard as I used to but the ball is not going in.
"To play four days is always important but it is disappointing I never competed or contended here in any shape or form."
Montgomerie must now focus on Ryder Cup matters as an announcement is expected on Tuesday as to who his vice captains will be for the event at Celtic Manor in October.
