Singapore success for Poulter

Golf, 12:12, November 1, 2009

Ian Poulter's final-round 72 was enough for him to secure his first European Tour victory since 2006 at the weather-hit Singapore Open.

The Briton's third birdie of the day from 30ft on the 13th helped him hold off a late challenge from Graeme McDowell, whose three successive bogeys at the 14th, 15th and 16th holes saw him fall away at the Sentosa Club. And Poulter clinched his eighth European title and first since the Madrid Open in 2006 by one shot from China's Liang Wen-chong.

"Coming out today I made some mistakes to make it too close for comfort," said Poulter.

"But to stand on the last knowing I had to make five, I was pretty happy."

He added: "Getting off to the start I did, getting out of the blocks pretty quick, surprised me a little as I was mis-hitting some shots and I made it a little interesting on a string of holes yesterday.

"The birdie on 13 pumped me up. I was getting angry. I had played so well in spells this week and it is just so annoying to just let easy holes slip with two bogeys and then lose the lead.

"Graeme was in front and I felt like I had to do something. And I did, I rolled one in from 30ft and it gave me a boost after a tiring day."
