Atletico Madrid midfielder Paulo Assuncao has left Spain for home after joining Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo on a one-year deal.
The 32-year-old joined Atletico from Porto in 2008 and made 139 appearances during four seasons at the Vincente Calderon, helping the club win the 2010 and 2012 Europa League titles and the UEFA Super Cup. He leaves Atletico after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract a year early.
Assuncao left Atletico's pre-season training camp on Friday to complete his move to Sao Paulo and leaves Spain with a heavy heart.
"I've experienced the best moments of my career at Atletico, winning three European titles," he told Atletico's official website.
"I'll always remember my time at Atletico. I hope they do very well this season and achieve their objectives."
Assuncao returns home after eight years in Europe, in which time he has played in Spain, Portugal and Greece. He is looking forward to showing what he can do on home soil.
"I'm really excited about returning to Brazil and hope I can continue showing what I can do," he added.
