Portuguese legend hangs up his boots
International Football, 13:18, May 17, 2009 ,
Portuguese legend and former World Player of the Year Luis Figo has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.
Figo added another Scudetto to his collection last night as his Internazionale side claimed the title for the fourth successive year without kicking a ball as nearest rivals AC Milan lost 2-1 away at Udinese.
Following Inter's success Figo decided to announce he plans to retire from the game at the end of the season.
Speaking to A Bola Figo said: "This is the first time I have celebrated before playing. This is the best way to end."
The gifted playmaker nearly hung up his boots last season after a fallout with then Inter boss Roberto Mancini but following the appointment of Jose Mourinho he decided to play on for another season and has been involved on a regular basis this season as Inter marched towards the title.
Reports had emerged linking Figo with a transfer to the MLS but the player himself has downplayed suggestions he will continue his career in America.
He added: "I will not play again at the highest level and I will most likely not accept any offer.
"Only if something special emerges, and it is from outside of Europe, but it is not likely."
Figo began his career with Sporting Lisbon in 1989 before spells with Barcelona and Real Madrid. In 2001 he won the prestigious Ballon d'Or and has been capped 127 times by Portugal.
