Ron in Real move error - Queiroz
International Football, 09:40, June 15, 2009 ,
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz feels Cristiano Ronaldo is making a mistake by leaving Manchester United for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The former Red Devils assistant boss has broken his silence on the proposed £80million world record deal which will see the 24-year-old move to the Bernabeu from Old Trafford by the end of June.
Queiroz claims United is where Ronaldo should be playing his football in order to avoid going off the rails due to outside influences, not to mention the fact boss Sir Alex Ferguson has transformed him into the World Footballer of the Year.
He said: "Manchester United was the right club for him. But at the end of the day, the player has made a decision and United have had a great relationship with him because they have had the best of his performances for the last six years.
"Cristiano believes it is time to move and the fee is huge, but he has won all the trophies and become the best player in the world in a United shirt."
On fears that Ronaldo could be distracted by the celebrity lifestyle at Madrid following recent pictures of him mixing with American socialite Paris Hilton, Queiroz added: "I must say that, at Real Madrid, those things can happen very easily. But I am sure that (Real president) Florentino Perez and (general director) Jorge Valdano will learn from the mistakes of a few years ago, when the players were too committed to advertising and compromised by deals outside the pitch.
"When you put together players like Beckham, Zidane, Figo and Roberto Carlos, the challenge is huge and, with Ronaldo and Kaka, I'm sure these things will come up again."
