Smith lands Olympics spot
Ipswich defender Tommy Smith has been named in New Zealand's football squad for this summer's Olympic Games in London.
The 22-year-old captained his nation in this month's World Cup qualifiers and OFC Nations Cup matches in the absence of Ryan Nelsen, who is likely to regain the armband at the Games having been named as one of three overage players in the All Whites squad.
Smith told Town's official website: "It's a fantastic honour to be selected for the Olympics and it will be a great experience too. We're scheduled to play at Old Trafford which will be great too as it's a fantastic stadium.
"I will be back for the start of pre-season with Ipswich for a while before then joining up with the All Whites. Playing in the Games would add to my match fitness ahead of the new season as well as being a fantastic honour, so I think I will be fine for Ipswich come the start of the season.
"I'm just really excited to be involved in the Olympics, especially with them being held in England."
New Zealand have been drawn in Group C of the 16-team tournament and will face Brazil, Egypt and Belarus as they look to qualify for the quarter-finals.
