Town face striker target blow
Ipswich Town, 13:02, April 27, 2010 ,
Ipswich's hopes of signing Scunthorpe striker Gary Hooper could be dashed after it emerged Wigan are set to join the race for him.
Town boss Roy Keane has already confirmed that he is hoping to bolster his forward line in the summer transfer window given that Jon Walters currently tops this season's scoring charts with just eight goals. And he had been strongly linked with a swoop for 22-year-old Hooper, who has bagged 19 league goals to ensure the Iron will stay in the Championship for a second season.
However the fact the striker has done so well at Glanford Park since joining the club in a £125,000 deal from Southend two years ago, has resulted in a myriad of other clubs expressing an interest and seen his valuation increase dramatically.
Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins would be loathe to lose such a key player, but reports that he could fetch a fee of around £2million may tempt them to sell. And if a club does offer that sort of money the then Ipswich may well be priced out of the race, while Wigan boss Roberto Martinez would no doubt be in the driving seat for his signature given that he could offer Hooper a chance of playing Premier League football.
