Martinez wants to make Bilbao history
Athletic Bilbao star Javi Martinez is desperate to help the club secure their first European trophy.
Bilbao have never been relegated from the Primera Division and have landed the Spanish title eight times, but the club have never won a European competition.
The Basque outfit meet fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the final of the Europa League in Bucharest on Wednesday and Martinez is desperate to secure the title, but he admits it will not be easy to get the better of Los Colchoneros.
"We are one of the most important clubs in the Spanish league, and not only that because very few teams in the world have stayed in the first division throughout their entire history," Martinez told the official Uefa website.
"If a club like this has never won a European trophy and they have a chance now, that could be a great memory to cherish for eternity. We need to be aware of that, and that's why we regard this final as something historic.
"Atletico are a difficult club to play against because since the arrival of [coach Diego] Simeone they have started to play very aggressively. They're very hard to beat."
