Blanc defends Gourcuff omission
France Ligue 1,
France coach Laurent Blanc has denied that it was a gamble to leave Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff out of his Euro 2012 squad.
The 25-year-old midfielder was named in Les Bleus' provisional 26-man squad but was omitted from the final 23-man party, along with Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Blanc's decision to leave Gourcuff at home surprised many in the French media but the former Manchester United defender made it clear that the player's lack of fitness was behind his decision to look elsewhere.
"I have read that it is a gamble, but that is not what I do," he told L'Equipe. "We brought him with the intention that he would play a key role in the team. Unfortunately, after five days of training he suffered an ankle injury, a recurring injury.
"As he was already behind the others, there were too many risks."
