Paul Sturrock has revealed his disappointment at Southend's performance in their 1-0 play-off semi-final first-leg defeat to Crewe.

The Shrimpers went down to a second-half Adam Dugdale header in a scrappy encounter at the Alexandra Stadium on Saturday, which was largely bereft of quality football. The goal seemed to invigorate Sturrock's men up but the Scottish boss admits that it was too late and says that his side simply 'didn't turn up'. "Southend, the way we've been playing lately, didn't turn up tonight," the 55-year-old boss told Sky Sports. "We were very disappointing all over the football pitch. "Saying that, in the second half we've got three or four clear-cut chances which would have put a different complexion on the game but I think it's a fair result."
