Benitez shock rejection

Liverpool, 14:35, January 16, 2009 ,

Rafa Benitez has rejected the new contract on offer at Liverpool with the manager unhappy with a lack of control over football matters.

The Spaniard is understood to be frustrated at having to take a backseat over certain issues, with his relationship with chief executive Rick Parry believed to be strained.
Benitez has stated that he will only agree a new deal if he is given more control and the contract snub is likely to lead to yet another power struggle amongst the Anfield hierarchy.
The Reds boss told the Echo: "The owners feel that the manager's decisions need to be subject to the chief executive.
"But I know that I am subject to results and to our fans and they are the best judges I will ever have."
Benitez, who insists that the money on offer and length of deal is not an issue, has reportedly told American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett of his decision to reject the offer.
