Johnson chooses Liverpool

Liverpool, 18:42, June 22, 2009 ,

Glen Johnson is poised to join Liverpool for £17.5million after the Reds confirmed the full-back had agreed personal terms over a move.

Johnson is now expected to complete a switch to Anfield in the next few days and looks set to become boss Rafa Benitez's first major signing of the summer.
A statement on the club's website read: "Liverpool FC confirmed this evening that they had reached an agreement with Portsmouth Football Club and with Glen Johnson for the transfer of the player to Anfield."
Chelsea are also interested in the England international but it appears the 24-year-old has chosen Liverpool as his next destination and will tie up a deal and join the rest of Benitez's squad for pre-season training next month.
Johnson's imminent arrival casts further doubt on the future of Alvaro Arbeloa at Anfield. He's been heavily linked with a move back to Real Madrid in a deal worth around £8million.
