Liverpool deny sale rumours

Liverpool, 15:10, June 14, 2009 ,

Liverpool are playing down speculation that Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso will leave the club by stating the pair aren't for sale.

The Anfield club have released a statement today denying rumours that the midfield duo are set to leave Merseyside, with Barcelona and Real Madrid the reported destinations.
Reports in the Sunday newspapers have added fuel to the fire that both players could leave Anfield this summer, with Mascherano allegedly homesick while Alonso is determined to force a move through to La Liga after feeling unwanted by the club.
Despite Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez claiming both players are integral to his plans for the club the unprecedented level of attention has forced the Reds into releasing a statement once again denying rumours the pair are for sale.
''Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players," the Liverpool statement read.
''Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal.''
