Louis van Gaal is after the manager's position at Anfield rather than a football directors job which he is being touted for.

The Dutchman had been linked with the sporting directors job at Anfield, as the club restructure their management set up, but he is after the top job and he may well be considered for it. The 60-year-old told the Sun: "My fingers are itching. I'm full of fire and want to work with players, I get dozens of offers but I'm waiting for the best one." Wigan's Roberto Martinez remains the favourite to replace Kenny Dalglish but former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas' chances appear to be receding.
