Midfielder deal on cards

Liverpool are trying to avoid another summer of Barcelona interest by offering Javier Mascherano a two year contract extension.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez freely admits last summer's constant speculation that the midfielder was wanted by Barcelona affected the players form in the first half of the season and the last thing the Reds want is a repeat of that this summer.
With that in mind they are to make him a new offer of another two years on top of the two he has remaining and officials from the club are hoping to open talks with the player's representatives in the coming weeks.
