Power struggle looms

Liverpool, 09:18, January 13, 2009 ,

A new power struggle at Anfield appears to be looming between Rafa Benitez and the club's owners over the boss' contract demands.

Benitez admitted on Friday that talks over a new deal, which started way back in November, appeared to have stalled although he has apparently reached an agreement over the length of the deal and his salary.
The stumbling block would appear to be Benitez's demands for total control over transfers and more of an input with the Academy. And he must now decide whether to back down in his battle with George Gillett and Tom Hicks or withdraw from negotiations and see out the remaining 18 months on his present deal.
One piece of good news for Benitez is that he will not face any FA charges over his attacks on Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson during the past few days.
