Reds' ace exit confirmed

Liverpool, 18:38, January 20, 2009 ,

Jermaine Pennant has joined Portsmouth on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season.

Liverpool have let the unsettled winger move to Fratton Park for the remainder of the campaign after it became clear he was not in Reds boss Rafa Benitez's plans at Anfield.
Pompey boss Tony Adams is delighted with the addition to his squad and remembers the 26-year-old from the pair's time at Arsenal.
"I've known him a long time," said the Blues boss on the Portsmouth website. "We were together at Arsenal a long, long time ago. He was the new kid on the block and a very exciting prospect.
"He's quick and technically very gifted. He can have a go at defenders.
"I saw him play with Peter Crouch for Liverpool at Fulham last year and he was constantly getting past their left-back and getting crosses in for Crouchie.
"That's a good combination that I wanted to put back together. He's going to put some good crosses in and hopefully weigh in with a few goals himself."
Benitez was keen to sell the former Birmingham winger for a fee rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season when his current contract expires.
But he instead was happy to let Pennant join Pompey on a temporary basis at first with a view to a deal being struck in the summer.
