Winger deal set to go through
Liverpool, 10:23, January 20, 2009 ,
Jermaine Pennant is finally expected to leave Liverpool after Portsmouth described his move to Fratton Park as 'very close'.
The out-of-favour winger is set to join Pompey on a short-term deal after talks between the player and the club in the past few days went well.
Portsmouth executive chairman Peter Storrie, speaking in The News, revealed the former Birmingham star is on the verge of a 'loan or short-term permanent deal', probably just until the end of the season.
"We are trying our very best to bring players in," he said. "As far as Jermaine is concerned, it's very, very close - as we are with one or two others.
"It was only ever going to be a loan or short-term permanent deal.
"He is a free agent at the end of the season and he doesn't want to give up those rights. Whether it is a contract until the end of June or a loan, it's a bit irrelevant."
Pennant has been a virtual outcast at Anfield all season and has not even featured in Rafa Benitez's squad since last October and the Reds boss has been trying to offload him for around £3million in the transfer window.
However, he appears to have settled for letting the 26-year-old join Pompey on a short-term basis with the potential for a long-term move in the summer a possibility.
