Adebayor denies 'mercenary' claims

Manchester City, 11:42, July 19, 2009 ,

Man City new boy Emmanuel Adebayor insists he would have joined Barcelona or Milan last summer if he was motivated by money.

The £25m Togo international finally put pen to paper on a five-year deal on Saturday to bring an end to his three-year Arsenal career.
Reports last week suggested the 25-year-old was stalling on a move to Eastlands in order to flush out interest from clubs involved in the Champions League, but Adebayor has blasted those claims.
"People who think that I have joined City for the money are wrong," said the former Monaco man, who is reported to have signed a deal worth £150,000 a week.
"If I had made a move for that reason then I would have been playing for Barcelona or Milan last season. They gave me bigger offers than Arsenal did for me to stay.
"I am here because I was impressed by the way the chairman at City spoke to me about the ambition of this club. I want to be part of a club that is aiming to be one of the biggest in the world."
