Berbatov brink for rivals
Manchester United, 16:01, August 15, 2008 ,
Sir Alex Ferguson would not comment on the Dimitar Berbatov speculation but United are thought to be edging closer to a deal today.
The United boss refused to answer questions on the rumours that United and Spurs are playing a game of brinkmanship in order to drive down or force up the transfer fee of a player who appears to be keen to make the switch.
Tottenham want £32 million for the ex-Bayer Leverkusen frontman, but United opened the bidding with £20million and seem reluctant to go much higher than £25million for the 27-year-old.
Ferguson wants another striker in to complete his prefereed compliment of four forwards and with Louis Saha set to go, that will mean an opportunity for Frazer Campbell or Manucho.
Wayne Rooney's return from a stomach virus means United are not in any hurry to complete a deal for Berbatov before the weekend.
Ferguson said: "In terms of attacking options we're down to the bare bones a bit but the backbone will be there with the midfielders and defenders all available so there's good variety there.
"Hopefully, it will be enough for us to get through the first hurdle against Newcastle."
