City were close - Wenger

Manchester United, 09:35, August 22, 2008 ,

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims he hijacked Mikael Silvestre's medical at Man City to take him to the Emirates.

City and Sunderland were both strongly linked with a swoop for the versatile France defender but Wenger made a late move to successfully land him in a £750,000 deal from Man Utd.
And the Arsenal chief admits he left it late in the day before moving to bolster his defence for the forthcoming campaign.
He said: "He was in advanced talks with Manchester City already.
"I don't know whether he finished the medical or not, he can explain to you, but I heard he was completely free."
