Ferdinand learns ban fate
Manchester United, 14:54, January 28, 2010 ,
Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand will miss games against Arsenal, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Everton after being banned for four games.
The England defender was charged with violent conduct following a clash with Hull's Craig Fagan last Saturday but contested it and played against Manchester City on Wednesday.
But he was found guilty on Thursday and will now miss four matches in the Premier League - one more than he would been banned for had he not denied the charge. The extra game was tacked on as his denial was deemed to be "frivolous".
An FA statement read: "At an Independent Regulatory Commission today Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was given a four-match suspension to be served with immediate effect.
"Ferdinand denied a charge of violent conduct in relation to an incident in Manchester United's home match with Hull City on Saturday 23 January 2010.
"Furthermore, the Independent Commission felt that the player's denial of the charge was frivolous and on that basis have awarded an additional one match ban upon the statutory three match ban awarded for violent conduct."
