Fergie steps up RVP bid
Sir Alex Ferguson missed Manchester United's friendly with Hannover as he works on a deal to sign Robin van Persie.
United wrapped up a 4-3 victory against Hannover but Ferguson was not present as he worked on 'club business' and it is thought a deal for Van Persie is close to being secured.
Ferguson wants the Dutch striker on board before the big kick-off against Everton a week on Monday but there is still some negotiating to be done before a deal is completed.
Reds chief executive David Gill has been in London negotiating with the Gunners all weekend and Ferguson also stayed back in England to help conclude the deal.
United have failed with one offer of £15million and they will have to pay at least £20million if they are to convince the Gunners to cash in on their star man.
Arsene Wenger does not want to sell to United but Van Persie has made it clear he only wants to move to Old Trafford so it is thought a deal will eventually be hammered out.
