Ferguson calls on FA to act on racism

Manchester United, 12:40, February 8, 2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has called upon the FA to clamp down on racism in football.

The issue has been in the spotlight in recent weeks following the eight game ban handed to Liverpool striker Luis Suarez for racially abusing Red Devils defender Patrice Evra.
Chelsea and England captain John Terry will stand trial in July accused of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand while there have also been a number of recent incidents involving supporters racially abusing players.
Suarez is set to face Evra and United for the first time since the incident at Old Trafford on Saturday, adding to what will already be a tempestuous clash between the two great rivals.
Speaking ahead of that clash Ferguson admits he is shocked by the re-emergence of racism in football and has urged the authorities to take a hard line on anyone found guilty of such abuse.
"I don't understand at all where it's coming from," said the Scot.
"This is a moment where we have to take stock and we should do something about it if it's surfacing again, and be really hard and firm on any form or shape of racism.
"There have been a couple of examples recently which is not good. In 2012, you can't believe it. It was obvious maybe 20 years ago and the improvements have been for everyone to see.
"I have had some fantastic black players and with every one of them I have enjoyed my working relationship with them."
