Fringe men to get Cup chance for United
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov will feature in a youthful Manchester United squad at Aldershot.
The Red Devils chief is looking to get the right mix of youth and experience for the Carling Cup fourth round encounter at the EBB Stadium on Tuesday evening as the side look to bounce back from Sunday's shattering 6-1 derby defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Old Trafford.
And, Ferguson has revealed that, while he will take the same younger members of his squad to face the League Two side that featured in the previous round at Leeds, where United triumphed 3-0, strike duo Owen and Berbatov will also be handed game time.
"At the moment, I've got a really strong squad," he told MUTV. "We took 23 players to Romania with us and left Rio [Ferdinand] behind because we weren't planning to use him in that game.
"So, with a squad of 24 players, some of them have to have games. Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov must have games.
"It'll be similar to what we did at Leeds, really. All [the youngsters involved at Elland Road] will be travelling with us.
"Young players emerge and take someone's position. It's happened time and time again at this club and I've experienced it over my 25 years. You see a young emerging star coming through the youth team, and then comes the Reserves and, before you know it, you say why don't you put this boy in the first team.
"It's down to temperament. That's important, and ability, courage and determination. They're all the factors we need for top players at United."
Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia and Park Ji-sung are all set to be involved again, while Paul Pogba could again be handed a run-out after featuring at Elland Road.
Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf will hope to get a chance while youngsters Michael Keane, Reece Brown, and Tom Thorpe should be in the squad too.
