Reds to monitor Rooney 'injury'

Manchester United, 09:05, October 12, 2009 ,

England have sent Wayne Rooney back to Manchester United because of a calf injury which will need to be monitored.

The United striker, England's star man as Fabio Capello lost his first competitive international in charge on Saturday night, finished the match in Ukraine with a tight calf muscle.
A subsequent scan and consultation with United medical staff led him to be sent back to Carrington for treatment ahead of a crucial week that sees United entertain Bolton on Saturday before travelling to CSKA Moscow and Liverpool.
Rooney will miss England's final World Cup qualifier against Belarus at Wembley on Wednesday, but could still land the honour of joint-top scorer in the European qualifying rounds with nine goals so far.
The FA confirmed on their website: "The squad trained [on Sunday afternoon] after returning from Ukraine. But following a scan on his calf, Wayne Rooney has returned to Manchester United."
