Striker set for new deal

Manchester United, 14:04, July 24, 2010 ,

Manchester United chief exec David Gill is planning to meet with Wayne Rooney to discuss the possibility of extending his contract.

United announced on Friday night they had agreed a new "long-term" deal with defender Nemanja Vidic and now the future of the England striker is high on Gill's agenda.
Rooney - like Vidic - still has two years to run on his existing agreement but the Old Trafford hierarchy are eager to tie him down for an extended period.
The former Everton forward is resting following his country's World Cup campaign and Gill says negotiations will begin when the 24-year-old returns from holiday.
Gill said: "The current intention is to meet with Wayne and his advisers when we're back from tour and he's back from holiday with a view to sorting out a new deal for him.
"It's clear from what he has said and what the club have said that both parties are very keen to sort things out and secure his long-term future at United.
"Given his desires and what he means to the club we're very confident that can be achieved."
