United consider England star swoop

Manchester United, 21:39, July 2, 2009

It's believed Manchester United have held initial talks with Michael Owen's representatives about signing the striker this summer.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star is available on a free transfer having fallen out of contract at Newcastle this month, with Aston Villa, Everton, Stoke and Hull also known to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Some bookmakers have slashed the odds on Owen joining the Premier League champions, who have added just Antonio Valencia to their ranks so far this close season.

Having lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer and missing out on Lyon frontman Karim Benzema, Sir Alex Ferguson is stepping up his attempts to add to his striking options.

The news that United are considering a potential move for the England man will surprise many, especially after his injury problems in recent season. But there is no doubting Owen's ability when fully fit, with the striker poaching 11 goals for the relegated Magpies last season.
