United have scope for big deal

Manchester United, 14:51, July 27, 2010 ,

Chief executive David Gill insists United boss Sir Alex Ferguson does have the money to sign a "high-quality" player should he want to.

United have spent relatively little so far this summer, compared to previous years, with a combined total of £20million going on Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.
Reports that finances are tight at Old Trafford have only been given credence by a lack of big spending but Gill is adamant that cash is there for Fergie should a player of real quality - who would improve the current squad - becomes available.
"The money is there if we believe there is a player who can improve what we believe is a very good squad," Gill said.
"The team has been together for a number of years and done very well. In order to improve it a player has to be of a very high quality."
"We are always looking at players. We are looking 365 days a year - it doesn't just start when the transfer window opens. We are looking at it. We studied a lot of players at the World Cup, but we knew about a lot of them before that."
He added: "Overall I think Sir Alex is very comfortable with the squad composition. That's not to say something won't happen, but I think it is a 'might', not a 'will'. We will see what happens over the next six weeks."
Two stars of the World Cup, Germany's Mesut Ozil and Holland's Wesley Sneijder, are just two of the names linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent days.
