United hitman to return
Manchester United, 10:52, August 15, 2008 ,
Wayne Rooney is set to return after a virus to start United's Premiership defence at home to Newcastle United on Sunday.
The England striker has shaken off the affects of the virus and trained all week, which was all Sir Alex Ferguson needed to see to name him in his side for the pipe-opener.
Rooney is set to replace suspended Nani in the side which started last Sunday's Community Shield against Portsmouth, partnering Carlos Tevez up front.
Michael Carrick is pressing for a starting berth alongside Paul Scholes in central midfield, in which case John O'Shea will drop out.
Gary Neville is set to start his first Premiership match since March 2007 leaving last season's Champions League final star Wes Brown to settle for a place on the seven-man bench.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Ji-Sung Park and Owen Hargreaves are all injured while Anderson will not be available until August 28.
