United have been alerted to the chance of signing Barcelona star Xavi who is pondering a move, according to his agent.
The 28-year-old Spanish international, voted the best player at Euro 2008, is said to be unhappy with his contract negotiations at the Nou Camp and is ready to try his luck in England.
United appear to be the front runners as Sir Alex Ferguson seeks a replacement for Paul Scholes, who turns 34 this week and is nearing the end of his shelf-life.
It is understood that Barcelona have offered Xavi £80,000 a week, which is below the salary offered to the club's top earners such as Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o
Xavi's agent Ivan Corretja said: "We have not been able to solve the situation at Barcelona, despite some months of negotiations. We feel he should be offered a deal which reflects his performances on the pitch.
"Everybody at Barcelona knows that there are some big European clubs interested in Xavi, particularly in England at the moment, and we will not allow this to go on forever."
