Record United signing Dimitar Berbatov admits his winner against Middlesbrough last night ended the "worst week" of his life.
The Bulgarian celebrated with glee as his 69th minute volley claimed a vital win for the title chasers and banished the memories of a week where he missed three starts after being struck down by a virus.
Berbatov watched from the sidelines as United lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan and then came off the bench to help salvage a win from a tense tussle at Stoke.
"Personally, it was the worst week of my life. It was bad for me but in the end it ended happily for the team," he said.
"It was a very important win," he told MUTV. "It was a must-win game for us and I am glad that we won it. We were the better team and had so many chances to score.
"In the end we scored just once, but it was enough to take the three points. Sometimes 1-0 is enough, and the three points are the most important thing."
Berbatov is confident the Reds are ready to mount a serious title bid and believes he has a lot more to show to prove himself to the Old Trafford faithful.
"We are there, we are right there," he added. "We can win it and we have two games in hand. When we win them it will be good for us, but in the end I think it's in our hands.
"Personally I have plenty more to show. But I'll keep working and with the help of the guys I think we can do a lot."
