Arsenal 0-3 Chelsea
Match Reports, 18:30, November 29, 2009 ,
Didier Drogba scored twice to help Chelsea record a 3-0 victory over Arsenal to move eight points clear at the top of the table.
In what was considered as a must win game for Arsene Wenger's men, they started the brighter of the two sides. The Gunners moved forward at pace and passed the ball around in the fashion they are famous for.
However, they failed to create any clear cut chances though and Chelsea always looked threatening on the break. Then, with the game evenly posed with half-time beckoning, the visitors grabbed two quick goals to put themselves in command.
First of all, on 41 minutes, Drogba guided an Ashley Cole cross into the roof of the net to give his side the lead.
Four minutes later, the ex-Gunners full-back was the provider again as his dangerous cross was turned into his own net by Thomas Vermaelen.
Clearly Arsenal needed a quick response after the break if they were to have any chance getting back into the game and Wenger's side thought they had done just that after 49 minutes when Andrei Arshavin bundled the ball into the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for an earlier foul by Eduardo on Petr Cech.
This was the closest the home side came to breaking a solid Chelsea defence and the game was all but over in the 86th minute when Drogba got his second goal of the game and ninth in nine games against Arsenal.
The Blues striker smashed the ball into the net from a free-kick from just outside the penalty area to make it 3-0. He then received a standing ovation from the away supporters when he was withdrawn moments later - a testament to the role he had played in condemning Arsenal to their second successive Premier League defeat.
