Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United

Match Reports, 18:19, January 22, 2012

Manchester United secured all three points in north London as they recorded a deserved victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

It was a slow start to the game at the Emirates with both sides feeling each other out in the opening stages.
On the half hour mark United started to enjoy a decent spell and Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny was called into action at his near post from an effort from Nani on 35 minutes.
United continued to pile on the pressure and finally made a breakthrough minutes before half-time, as Ryan Giggs picked up the ball on the left flank and delivered a superb cross which found Antonio Valencia on the back post who headed home.
The visitors continued to dominate possession but a slip from Chris Smalling on 51 minutes allowed Tomas Rosicky through on goal but when he passed the ball to Robin Van Persie just eight yards out from goal the Dutch international fired the great chance wide of the left upright.
On 64 minutes Danny Welbeck found himself on goal and managed to clip the ball past Szczesny but Per Mertesacker got back just in time to clear the ball before it crossed the line.
It was Arsenal who managed to find the back of the net on 70 minutes when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain found Van Persie with a neat ball and the Dutch striker slipped the ball past Anders Lindegaard.
However United found themselves back on top when Welbeck linked up with Valencia, who turned provider as his return pass was well dispatched by the striker on the 82 minute.
Welbeck's goal was the decider and it was United who came away with all three points.
