Aston Villa 1-0 Everton
Match Reports, 18:57, August 29, 2010 ,
Luke Young's first-half strike was enough to seal a vital 1-0 win for Aston Villa but they rode their luck against unlucky Everton.
The Toffees began brightly but Villa were ahead in the ninth minute after a fine flowing move that ended with the defender finishing it off in style.
John Carew headed into the path of Ashley Young who found his namesake on the edge of the area and the right-back curled the ball into the top left corner for only his second goal for the club.
The visitors dominated possession and Steven Pienaar came close to levelling before the break when his curling shot hit the post with Brad Friedel beaten.
Everton were much the better side in the second-half and came close again when Jack Rodwell headed Mikel Arteta's free-kick inches wide.
Villa were on the back foot for large periods and were saved by the superb Friedel.
The American came to their rescue on numerous occasions with some fine saves, notably from substitute Louis Saha, to ensure the win for his team and condemn Toffees to their worst league start for more than 10 years.
