Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City
Match Reports, 19:31, January 22, 2011 , | No Comments
Darren Bent was Aston Villa's hero on his debut as he scored the only goal to give Gerard Houllier's side a narrow win over Man City.
Neither side created any real chances in the opening stages at Villa Park until Joe Hart struggled to deal with an Ashley Young shot and new signing Bent was there to tap the rebound home after 18 minutes.
Manchester City enjoyed plenty of possession after going a goal down but they did not really trouble the Aston Villa defence.
Former Villa player Gareth Barry nearly levelled the scores before half-time but his header just went wide of the goal.
City continued to dominate possession in the second half but were frustrated by a tight Villa defence.
Nigel de Jong had a shot which took a deflection off Ciaran Clark and hit the post, as City turned the screw in the dying moments of the game.
However, despite some late chances, they could not grab a late goal and Villa picked up all three points.
