Darren Bent grabbed a brace for Sunderland as Blackburn twice came from behind to earn a point at Ewood Park.
Chances were few and far between in an uninspiring first half. Keith Andrews twice went close from distance for Rovers, while at the other end David Meyler's drive flew over the bar.
Bent broke the deadlock seven minutes after the break, shooting home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
Rovers went straight up the other end after the restart to level matters as Morten Gamst Pedersen beat two men before firing in off the post.
Bent grabbed his second on 65 minutes when he beat the offside trap and slotted the ball low past an advancing Paul Robinson.
The home side equalised again when El Hadji Diouf headed past Marton Fulop after meeting Pascal Chimbonda's cross. The home side looked the more likely of the two to snatch a winner but couldn't find a way past Fulop in the Sunderland goal.
