A late penalty from Charlie Adam was not enough for Blackpool as two goals from Kieran Richardson gave Sunderland the win.

Sunderland started off the better of the two sides and Steed Malbranque had a great chance to put the visitors ahead but he headed over the bar after 10 minutes.
It was the Black Cats who took the lead after 16 minutes as Richardson slotted the ball home with a good finish after a great ball from Asamoah Gyan.
The visitors made it 2-0 on 37 minutes thanks to that man Richardson again who shot low to beat the keeper at the near post.
In an open second half, substitute Marlon Harewood nearly pulled one back for the Tangerines, but his shot just went wide of the post.
Sunderland defended well and Blackpool struggled to make any real chances in the game until David Vaughan went down easily in the box and Lee Mason gave the penalty.
Charlie Adam scored from the spot-kick on 86 minutes but Blackpool failed to find a second and Sunderland picked up all three points at Bloomfield Road.
