Bolton Wanderers 0-1 Wigan Athletic

Match Reports, 16:36, December 28, 2008

Amr Zaki's first-half penalty maintained Wigan's recent run but Danny Shittu almost claimed a point for Bolton with a late header.

Shittu's effort struck the crossbar in stoppage time as Bolton pressed in a see-saw game that could have gone either way.

Kevin Nolan struck a dipping volley from just outside the box that flew fractionally over the crossbar to spark the action midway through the first half then, ten minutes later, substitute Henri Camara tested Jussi Jaaskelainen with his first touch.

Camara struck from range with his left-foot but Jaaskelainen made a superb flying save to deny the striker.

On the stroke of half-time, Camara went down after a push from Andy O'Brien inside the box. Zaki stepped up to take the penalty and confidently placed it into the corner.

After the break, Shittu met a Matthew Taylor corner with a glancing header that was destined for the corner but Wilson Palacios was on the line to head the ball away on fifty-four minutes.

Just after the hour Johann Elmander turned and shot inside the box forcing a good save out of Michael Pollitt, who replaced the unfortunate Chris Kirkland who was again injured in the pre-match warm-up.

The rebound fell for Kevin Davies but his shot struck the post and went behind.

Wigan held on to earn the victory making it four wins in five and sending them into seventh in the Premier League. The defeat for Bolton causes them to drop one place to eleventh in the table but they will certainly feel they should have taken at least a point from this game.
