Hull City earned a precious point in their fight against relegation to lift them out of the bottom three going into the final weekend.
Against the run of play Bolton took the lead with a slick counter attack on 26 minutes. Matt Taylor's shot was blocked but the ball fell kindly to full-back Gretar Steinsson whose powerful drive beat Boaz Myhill, though the Hull keeper may look back on replays and think he could have done better.
The Tigers dominated the closing stages of the first half but had to wait until after the break to get the goal they deserved when Craig Fagan scored the goal that may well keep them in the league.
Hull broke with pace and a terrible mistake from Shittu, who had been so impressive through the first half, allowed Fagan the time and space to place his shot beyond Jaaskelainen.
Following Hull's equaliser they were the only side really in the game and on 71 minutes the ever-green Nicky Barmby was denied a goal when his left-footed drive from the edge of the area cannoned back off the upright.
Jaaskelainen then produced two world class saves to keep Bolton in the game as he kept out headers from Daniel Cousin and Fagan to make sure the points were shared.
