Burnley 1-2 Portsmouth
Match Reports, 17:57, February 27, 2010 ,
Bottom of the table Portsmouth put their off-field problems behind them to defeat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor.
After what has been a dreadful few days for the away side, their players stood up to be counted from the very first whistle. They looked to hit Burnley on the counter attack at every given opportunity and almost took the lead after 11 minutes, but Danny Webber dragged his shot wide.
The Clarets had chances of their own, most notably Andre Bikey's header which just missed the target, but the away side always looked the more likely and they look the lead on 26 minutes. A free-flowing Portsmouth move was rounded off by Frederic Piquionne who tapped home from Webber's cross.
The home side took just five minutes to get back on level terms though ,as Martin Paterson produced an impressive lob over the head of David James and into the net.
Into the second half, it was again Portsmouth who took the game to Burnley and they had the chance to go ahead when Clarke Carlisle brought down Piquionne in the penalty area. Brian Jensen managed to save Jamie O'Hara's spot kick though to lift the home supporters.
Carlisle made another mistake after 76 minutes though to concede yet another penalty. The defender reacted slowly to a throw in before losing the ball and eventually hacking down substitute John Utaka in the area.
Hassan Yebda took the penalty this time and he made no mistake, smashing the ball past Jensen to give his side the lead. Burnley never recovered from this and despite Ricardo Rocha receiving a red-card in injury-time, Portsmouth managed to hold onto a deserved win.
