Chelsea claimed top spot for a few hours at least courtesy of first-half strikes from Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard.
Drogba gave the Blues the lead after just three minutes, heading home powerfully at the back post from Joe Cole's cross.
Ashley Cole went close to a second for the home side, the defender seeing his strike tipped onto the post by Scott Carson.
On the stoke of half time Lampard did double the Blues advantage, clipping the ball into the back of the net following a great run by Ashley Cole.
Drogba looked to have bagged a brace on 64 minutes but Carson was again on hand to keep Chelsea out, making a great save from the striker.
At the other end Petr Cech had little to do, only really called into action to save from Chris Brunt in the second period.
