Chelsea 7-2 Sunderland
Match Reports, 17:07, January 16, 2010 ,
A thriller at Stamford Bridge saw a dominant Chelsea side thrash Sunderland to win 7-2 in impressive style.
The home side didn't have to wait long for the opening goal, although they wasted a couple of earlier chances to score, as Nicolas Anelka slotted the ball past Marton Fulop after good work from Michael Ballack.
Florent Malouda scored with a brilliant individual effort minutes later and his goal was bettered only by a stunning strike from Ashley Cole, with the defender dragging the ball around a Sunderland defender before clipping it past a bemused Fulop.
Chelsea continued to press forward with Sunderland looking understandably dejected and Frank Lampard soon added a fourth to the home team's impressive tally. Cole was involved once again to play in Lampard, who slid the ball into the net from close range. Sunderland looked visibly relieved when the whistle blew for half time but more of the same was to come after the break.
Anelka should have scored his second of the game shortly after the restart, with his shot hitting the bar and the post but Michael Ballack's powerful header left Fulop stranded after 52 minutes to further compound Sunderland's misery.
Bolo Zenden's goal from nowhere shortly after brought no joy to a Sunderland side that watched on miserably as Anelka took advantage of a mistake by Fulop to grab his second goal.
A frantic finish brought a fitting end to this clash, as Lampard and Darren Bent added goals for their respective sides in added time to end the match 7-2.
