Everton 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Match Reports, 17:19, May 9, 2009 ,

Everton missed the chance to move up to fifth in the Premier League after being held 0-0 by Tottenham at Goodison Park.

A game of few chances saw the Londoners enjoy the upper hand in the first half, while the Toffees took command after the interval and went close when Dan Gosling hit the woodwork.
However the two sides had to settle for a point apiece which means Everton remain in sixth spot, while Spurs are in eighth position, two points behind a Fulham side in the seventh spot which will offer a place in next season's new Europa League.
Tottenham adapted to the poor weather conditions early on but their only real chance of note came on 18 minutes when Gareth Bale curled a free kick over the Toffees' crossbar.
Everton did get some fluidity into their play and carved out some half-chances towards the back end of the first half.
Steven Pienaar played in Jo but Ledley King did well to block his effort on 41 minutes, before Marouane Fellaini dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area and Jack Rodwell thumped a shot over the bar right on half time.
Everton improved after the break, along with the weather, and went close on 58 minutes when Tim Cahill hammered a low drive inches wide of the Spurs goal with keeper Heurelho Gomes looking well beaten.
The best chance came on 68 minutes when Gomes could not clear a Pienaar corner and Gosling hit a shot into the ground which bounced up off the upright and behind.
Spurs' best chance arrived on the break two minutes later when Jermain Defoe turned and fired just wide of Howard's far post.
