Everton 2-1 Wigan Athletic
Match Reports, 17:11, August 30, 2009 ,
Former Wigan defender Leighton Baines struck from the penalty spot to hand Everton the win against his old club at Goodison Park.
Baines' penalty deep into stoppage time was enough to seal victory after Paul Scharner had earlier given Wigan a lead against the run of play.
Everton were by far the brightest side in the first half and dominated large chunks of play without ever really threatening Mike Pollitt's goal. Tim Cahill had a header which went straight at Pollitt and Rodwell forced a decent save from the Wigan man in a relatively tame first half.
It was Wigan, however, who found themselves in front in the 57th minute. Good work down the right between Charles N'Zogbia and Mario Melchiot worked space for a cross and Scharner stole in at the far post to head home.
It could have been 2-0 and game over just minutes later when Melchiot's pass found the on-rushing Jordi Gomez, who fired against the post with Tim Howard beaten.
Everton, though, were soon on level terms. Baines' corner was not dealt with by the Wigan defence and Louis Saha nodded home from three yards.
Everton continued to press in the closing stages looking for the winner, but after four successive corners it was Wigan who could have won it in the last minute. Sinclair broke but with men over he chose to shoot and the chance went begging.
But there was still time for a winner. Sub Jo drove into the area and was fouled by Boyce two minutes into stoppage time. Baines stepped up to blast home and Everton recorded their first win of the season.
