Goals from Steven Pienaar, Nikica Jelavic and Johnny Heitinga gave Everton a 3-1 win that sealed seventh place in the Premier League.
The Toffees took the lead after 16 minutes when Steven Pienaar's strike from the edge of the box looped into the top corner via a deflection off Mike Williamson.
Pienaar could have doubled the advantage when his shot from inside the area struck the post but the Toffees didn't have to wait long for their second goal.
With 29 minutes gone, in-form striker Nikica Jelavic chested down a long ball and escaped through on goal, his first effort was well saved by Tim Krul but the Croatian was alert to pick himself up and fire home the rebound.
Despite the prospect of Champions League football being the possible reward for victory, Newcastle laboured in the opening 45 minutes, failing to get a shot on target.
Alan Pardew's men did begin the second half the brighter side but it was the Toffees who scored next to seal the game.
On 65 minutes Darron Gibson's free-kick from the right found the unmarked Johnny Heitinga, who had the simple task of nodding past Krul from six yards.
The visitors were gifted a way back into the match with 18 minutes left when Tony Hibbert inexplicably headed the ball past his own 'keeper Tim Howard.
However, the Magpies couldn't find another way through, with Tim Cahill's injury-time red card for violent conduct the last action of the game.
