Fulham 0-2 Chelsea
Match Reports, 18:08, August 23, 2009 ,
Goals in each half from Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka sealed a comfortable and deserved 2-0 win for Chelsea at Fulham.
Drogba opened the scoring towards the end of the first half of the west London derby at Craven Cottage in which chances were at a premium. And, as Carlo Ancelotti's men dominated possession throughout, the game was wrapped up when Anelka scored with 14 minutes remaining.
It means Chelsea maintain their 100% start to the season after three games and sit behind early Premier League leaders Tottenham on goal difference.
Clint Dempsey found himself in space in the Chelsea area after two minutes but he hooked his shot over under pressure from John Terry, while John Pantsil put in a timely block to deny Florent Malouda at the other end a minute later.
John Obi Mikel lashed a shot just wide from distance after a Michael Ballack knockdown on 21 minutes.
Fulham's best chance came on 33 minutes when Dempsey wriggled free in the area, but Ricardo Carvalho dived in with a last-ditch tackle to prevent him getting a shot away on goal.
Chelsea finally went in front on 39 minutes when Frank Lampard played the ball to Anelka, whose pass then split the home defence for Drogba, who just about beat the offside trap, to fire into Mark Schwarzer's far bottom corner.
Chelsea started the second half on top and Drogba had a left-foot effort from a tight angle which Schwarzer had to save at the second attempt on 54 minutes, while Malouda dragged a shot across the face of goal on the hour mark.
However, the match was sewn up in 76 minutes when, following some great, quick passing play, Drogba fed a ball through to Anelka who got in behind the defence and went round Schwarzer before firing into the empty net.
