Match Reports, 17:25, December 6, 2009 ,
Fulham moved to eighth in the Premier League after Bobby Zamora's early goal proved decisive in an entertaining game at Craven Cottage.
Zamora's goal was the highlight of a first half dominated by flowing, attacking football from the home side. Damien Duff found John Pantsil in space on the right, and his cross found the head of Zamora, who managed to outmuscle and outwit the Sunderland defence, an occurence which developed into something of a trend throughout the half.
Sunderland were unable to cope with Fulham's movement in midfield and up front while, on the rare occasion that they did break through the home side's defence, strengthened by Brede Hangeland, Mark Schwarzer was on hand to smother the ball.
Zamora could have scored his second just before half time but his effort came crashing off the post, while Erik Nevland could also have furthered Fulham's lead but, after his initial attempt from close range was saved, his second effort was skied high over the bar.
Sunderland started the second half searching for an equaliser and their best chance resulted from a rare defensive error from Fulham. However, Kenwyne Jones' attempt was thwarted by Schwarzer. Despite Sunderland growing into the game in the second half, Fulham were a constant threat going forward, with Zamora showing touches of real class up front.
Boudewijn Zenden had a chance to score with a late strike on goal but once again the Fulham keeper remained strong.
