Denmark caused a major upset with Michael Krohn-Dehli's first-half goal making the difference against a wasteful Netherlands outfit.
The Dutch started strongly and enjoyed far more of the ball in the early stages of the Group B encounter at Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv.
The Netherlands wasted a host of chances and they were made to pay on the 24th minute when Krohn-Dehli found some space in the box and fired the ball past Maarten Stekenlenburg.
The Dutch managed to up the tempo for a short period and Arjen Robben almost levelled the scores on the 36th minute, when he was gifted the ball in the middle of the park, before firing the ball onto the left upright.
The Netherlands came out of the blocks in the second-half, with Robin Van Persie squandering a great chance, before Mark Van Bommel and Ibrahim Afellay had efforts from distance that failed to find the back of the net.
Substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had a decent chance to level the scores but Stephan Andersen smothered his chip well and the move broke down with time running out.
The Netherlands had a solid claim for handball turned down on the 90th minute but nothing was given and the Dutch left the Metalist Stadium with no points to show for their efforts.
